- A Note from LEVEL 2 - Basic
MicroSkills' Level 2 class emphasizes the use of English for everyday real-life situations. Students gain skills in speaking, listening, writing, and reading while they learn about Canadian culture. Class topics include Family Living, Transportation, Housing, Shopping, Health and Safety, Education, Employment, and Computer Basics.
In addition to classroom lessons, participants enjoy several field trips, including Kensington Market, the downtown Toronto Annex area, the Police Museum, CHIN Radio, Centre Island, and a local bowling alley.
- News from LEVEL 3 - Low Intermediate
Students at this level learn about Canadian attitudes and expectations at home, in the community, and in the work place. At the same time, they continue to improve their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. They also become familiar with Canadian housing and employment laws, banking and commercial services, and community and recreation services. Computers are also an important part of the Level 3 program. Using MS Word students improve their writing skills, and through the Internet they learn how to search for information.
- A Few Words from LEVEL 4 - Intermediate
A major part of the Level 4 program is the development of communication skills to build confidence and independence. Through computer assisted language learning, students perform real-life assignments to improve their oral and written English. For example they prepare letters, resumes, essays, and charts using MS Office software. The Internet is used frequently in this class to search for job information, print government documents, and send email notes.
The telephone can often be an obstacle for second language speakers. During this class, Level 4 students learn how to overcome this challenge with lessons on telephone etiquette and practical telephone assignments.
At the end of each major theme, students go on a field trip to complete their learning for that section. Trips are made to reference libraries and to City Hall and the Provincial Legislature, among other local places of interest.
- Hear from LEVEL 5 - Intermediate to Advanced
Participants in this class can participate in a variety of workshops and interact with guest speakers. People with expertise about government departments, job search techniques, employment standards, adult education, health care, and many other topics of interest are invited on a regular basis to address the class.
As they develop more sophisticated language skills, Level 5 students are able to have lively discussions and debates on current issues. This theme is often concluded with a trip to the CBC.
In addition, many of the language assignments are completed using the Internet, MS Office, and English language learning software. Another useful language activity in the classroom is role-playing job interviews. Sometimes this classroom activity leads to success in real-life job interviews: during the last term, more than a third of the class found employment after completing this level!
